Camikara Rum: India's First Pure Cane Juice Rum

Camikara is India's first pure cane juice rum, a spirit made not from molasses, as most Indian rums are, but from fresh sugarcane juice harvested directly from the fields of Haryana. The name comes from Sanskrit, where 'Camikara' translates to 'liquid gold', a fitting description of the fresh cane juice that forms the base of every bottle.
Made by Piccadily Agro Industries Limited, the same Haryana distillery that produces the internationally acclaimed Indri single malt whisky, Camikara is built on a single idea: let the sugarcane speak for itself. No added colour, no caramel, no artificial flavour.
Just cane juice, time, and oak. In production philosophy, Camikara sits closest to the agricole rums of Martinique and Réunion. In character, it is shaped entirely by North Indian terroir, the soil of Haryana's cane fields, the heat of Indian summers, and the patience of American oak barrels doing their work across several monsoon cycles.

The History
India has cultivated sugarcane for over 1,500 years. Fermented cane beverages appear in ancient Indian texts predating modern distillation by centuries. Yet for most of contemporary history, Indian rum became synonymous with mass-market, molasses-based production, affordable and reliable, but far removed from the cane's natural potential. Piccadily Agro Industries, based in Karnal district of Haryana, operates its own sugar mill, giving it something rare among distillers: direct access to fresh sugarcane juice at the point of harvest. During the winter cane season, the distillery pauses its malt whisky production and uses traditional pot stills to ferment and distil fresh cane juice before the volatile aromatic compounds are lost.
The spirit is then aged in American oak barrels and left to mature through the extreme heat of North Indian summers, a climate that compresses what might take fifteen years in Scotland into a fraction of the time. The 12-year-old expression was the first release, establishing the brand's credentials in India and internationally. The 8YO followed for export markets. In March 2024, the 3YO was launched across 13 Indian states — making Camikara accessible to a new generation of rum drinkers at home.
What Makes Camikara Different
Almost every Indian rum you have encountered, Old Monk, Contessa, McDowell's No. 1, is made from molasses, the thick by-product remaining after sugarcane is refined into table sugar. Molasses-based rum is the global norm and produces a sweeter, heavier style. Camikara uses a fundamentally different base: pure sugarcane juice, pressed and fermented immediately after harvest. This is the agricole method, used in the French Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. The result is a lighter, grassier, more complex rum with a freshness that molasses cannot replicate. You can taste the cane. You can taste the earth it came from. Beyond the base ingredient, Camikara's commitment to zero additions sets it apart. No artificial colour. No caramel. No flavour compounds. No added sugar. What goes into the glass is exactly what came out of the barrel.
The Three Expressions
- Camikara 3YO (42.8% ABV) — Grassy, fruity, and vibrant. The freshest expression of the cane. Available across 13+ Indian states.
- Camikara 8YO — Deeper and more complex. Dried fruit, leather, and oak in balance. Multiple international Gold and Master medals.
- Camikara 12YO — Extremely limited (3,600 bottles globally). Honey, dark chocolate, and a long fruitcake finish. India's rarest aged rum.
Flavour Philosophy
Camikara's flavour identity is shaped by two forces: the sugarcane grown in Haryana's fertile plains, and North India's climate, which accelerates ageing in ways a Scottish or Caribbean cellar cannot replicate. The philosophy is restraint, no flavour additions, no colour corrections. The rum tells you what the cane tasted like, what the oak contributed, and what the Haryana climate did over years in the barrel.
